A proposal for  dialogue between traditional and biomedical health practitioners.

Trueque, or non‐monetary exchange, is a practice long engrained in Chilote culture. In the past, this was practiced between inland farmers and fishermen who would exchange their respective harvests to fulfill the needs of each other without monetary transaction. This concept puts forth a model in which there is inherent good and benefice that comes from the knowledge and “resources” exchanged between one and other. Trueque symbolizes an idea bigger than an economic activity; it is an exchange and sharing of an ideology and framework for understanding human interaction. A Truque de Salud, or Health Exchange is needed between biomedical and indigenous practitioners in order to move towards a health system that truly reflects and includes the needs of all community members.
